Stitching the Southwest: Fabric Requirements & Kickoff Giveaway

Hey, dear Southwest fans! Are you excited to start our journey through the wild west of colors and shapes? Last week, I introduced our  new Stitching the Southwest Quilt Along and invited you to join the big #SouthwestQAL.

If today is the first time you’re hearing about this quilt adventure, you can read all the details here: New Quilt Along: Stitching the Southwest. This is where you’ll find all the info about the quilt along, including the schedule.

Today I’ll share the exact fabric requirements for the Southwest Quilt. And there’s also a kickoff giveaway with great prizes! 🎁 Scroll all the way down to find out how to take part.

By the way, following a suggestion from the community, I’ve created a quilt block featuring a horse. If you like, you can use this optional block to replace the longhorn skull in the center of the quilt. You’ll find all the details at the bottom of the post.

The “Stitching the Southwest” Quilt Top

Just like in our last quilt along, I mainly used basic fabrics, which ensures that the fabrics are readily available.

Even though I personally like to use much brighter and wilder prints sometimes, it doesn’t make much sense to work with fabrics that are no longer available when hosting a quilt along.

However, with the beautiful basics collections Confetti Cottons, Sparkler, and Dapple Dot by Riley Blake Designs, it was very easy to stick to basics! These fabrics coordinate perfectly, match wonderfully , and are available from Mojave Farms Quilting Co. You’ll find the link below again.

The finished quilt measures 56 × 80 inches (142 cm × 203 cm), a generous size that turns any wall or bed into a Southwest art piece.

Fabric Requirements for the Southwest Quilt

In the layout above, you can see how the fabrics are used.

I’ve also put together a graphic showing the individual colors and approximate fabric amounts. As mentioned, these are Riley Blake Basics:

You can download and print the fabric requirements document as a PDF below:

Of course, you don’t have to use the exact same fabrics as I did, they’re just an inspiration. The Southwest Trails quilt also looks amazing in your very own color palette! Earthy tones, warm sunset colors, and turquoise accents work particularly well if you’re in the mood for them.

Here you can see some variations of the Southwest patterns in different fabric combinations:

Order Fabric Bundles from Mojave Farms Quilt Co.

Do you like the fabrics I used for my quilt? Wonderful!
The wonderful and super talented Elli from Mojave Farms Quilt Co. has put together matching bundles with Riley Blake Basics for you, As creative as Elli is, she actually created a second color way, which is equally stunning. You can order your fabric bundle directly here:

👉 Mojave Farms Quilt Co.

For Canada, you can order your fabrics here with Jason:

👉 Kingfisher Craft Company

It’s best to order right away so you have all your fabrics ready when we start with the first block on January 8th!

Of course, Elli and Jason will also be happy to help you put together your own color combinations. You don’t have to travel all the way to see them 😉  you can simply contact them directly through their shop.

Or you can use your own fabric stash. Fat quarters are sufficient for most blocks. Only for the larger 16″×16″ or 24″x24″blocks (for example, the longhorn skull, the large cactus, and the bigger cowboy boot) you’ll need a bit more background fabric.

Materials – What Else You’ll Need

The lovely Annegret had the idea to replace the longhorn skull with a horse. That’s certainly the better option for her granddaughter. Of course, I was happy to grant her request. Here’s the result:

I couldn’t change the entire Southwest Quilt pattern, but the horse pattern is available in the matching size (24″ x 24″).

For everyone who would like to add it to their quilt, I’m offering a 50% discount. Just use the code HORSE in the shop. Here’s the link to the pattern:

👉 Go to the Horse Pattern

You can either replace the longhorn skull with the horse or turn the pretty horse into a matching pillow. 🐴

Please note that the fabric kit for the quilt was designed for the version with the longhorn skull, so you’ll need to get the fabrics for the horse separately. The background fabric requirement remains the same, so you can use that from the kit. For the horse itself, you’ll need 1 fat quarter for the head. For the mane, fabric scraps will do, you should have enough left over in the Southwest colors if you’re sewing with the kit.

I hope you’ll join me on this journey through the Southwest! We set off in January.

See you then,
Yours, Ingrid
